Build your pond - Planning Your Water Garden

An aquascaper's dream, the water garden typically contains a variety of aquatic plants and quite possibly a few goldfish. Water gardens in moderate climates need an area of the pond to be at least 2 feet deep, so that the pond doesn't freeze entirely from top to bottom - remember, your fish need the water to survive the winter. Colder climates require more depth, enough to provide at least 12" to 16" of water below the freeze zone.
