How To Build A Pond - Choose Your Pond Site

Ponds attract wildlife, especially birds and butterflies, so you'll enjoy your pond more if it is installed close to your home. You'll want to place your pond where it will receive at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun if you want to grow water lilies, although a shadier spot is fine for fish-only ponds. See the siting your pond page at Pond Expert to help you decide!

The sight and sound of running water will add a lot to your enjoyment of the pond, and that will require a pump. A pump will also allow you to keep more fish, keep your ponds' ecosystem healthier and reduce your maintenance burden.

Before you decide where your pond will be located, please take the time to determine (and mark) where the utility lines for gas and electric run on your property. Avoiding those utility lines will make your project a lot easier to complete!

Position your pond where runoff from rain will not flow into the pond. Runoff will carry fertilizers, chemicals, and organic debris into the pond. This surge of excess nutrients wil only encourage algae blooms. You may need to alter the terrain to eliminate runoff.

Consider where runoff from rain will flow out of the pond. If the weatherman calls for a stalled front and flash flooding in your area, where will your pond's runoff go? You may need to alter the terrain to direct runoff away from your foundation.

Use care when placing your pond around trees. Not only can they increase your maintenance burden, since falling leaves and other debris will need to be removed from the pond, but some species are poisonous - and others may give you problems with their root systems.
