Outdoor Elements recommends only non-woven, geotextile fabric for underlayment, because it "breathes".
This allows gases rising from the earth to dissipate, rather than causing bubbles to form under the pond liner.
There are disadvantages to using other materials for underlayment, such as sand or old carpeting.
They are more difficult to work with, may shift or settle, and are more difficult
to form to the pond's sides.

Underlayment is sold in standard widths of 5, 10 and 15 feet. For ponds wider than 15 feet, you will
receive 2 strips of underlayment, which may be installed with a slight overlap - there is no need to
splice underlayment!
