Polyethylene is an economic alternative to EPDM lining; however, it is much less flexible than EPDM, which makes it more difficult to work with and install correctly. It's use is typically reserved for very large ponds, as it can be ordered in greater sizes - 20 mil polyethylene can be sized as large as 50,00 square feet, and 30 mil can be sized as large as 27,000 square feet.

Outdoor Elements does not sell polyethylene in pre-cut sizes. Please contact us for a quote if you need this liner for your larger projects!

20 mil polyethylene liner is warranted for 10 years, for sizes up to 50,000 square feet.
30 mil polyethylene liner is warranted for 10 years, for sizes up to 27,000 square feet.

Outdoor Elements recommends only non-woven, geotextile fabric for underlayment, because it "breathes". This allows gases rising from the earth to dissipate, rather than causing bubbles to form under the pond liner. There are disadvantages to using other materials for underlayment, such as sand or old carpeting. They are more difficult to work with, may shift or settle, and are more difficult to form to the pond's sides.

Underlayment is sold in standard widths of 5, 10 and 15 feet. For ponds wider than 15 feet, you will receive 2 strips of underlayment, which may be installed with a slight overlap - there is no need to splice underlayment!
