Build your pond - Planning Your Backyard Pond

Larger than water gardens, backyard ponds are ideal if you plan to raise fish. Goldfish are relatively easy to care for, and you can also keep koi if you are prepared before you build.

Koi get quite large regardless of the size of the pond. We recommend that your koi pond be at least 1000 gallons in volume, but bigger is definitely better. It also needs to have an area of the pond at least 3 feet deep, although we recommend 4 to 5 feet.

Since we can't give you all the answers in the space on this page, we strongly recommended that you research koi if you are interested in this type of pond. See the choosing the right fish for your pond page at Pond Expert to help you decide!
